[講演要旨]

In the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea we get development of small and
intense instability lows in the winter season. These polar lows are
dangerous for small fishing vessels and also for land based activities on
the coast of Norway. We will give a short historic view on how forecasters
have been struggling to detect polar lows. Also we will describe how
Norwegian Meteorological Institute today does monitoring and forecasting
of polar lows. A recent case will be described (May 4th 2002); where a
cold air outbreak from north after passing Bear Island developed a polar
low off the coast of Northern Norway.

ノルウェー海のほぼ真ん中にある北極圏の小島ベアー・アイランド(ノ
ルウェー名: Bjornoya)にノルウェー気象台の協力のもと気象レーダー
を設置して北極圏の気象擾乱の活動について共同研究を行っています。
今回、ノルウェー北部管区気象台（トルムソ）の管区長のヘルゲ・タン
ゲンさんと予報官のマグヌス・オブヘッドさんが北大と国立極地研究所
に研究打ち合わせで来日されます。この機会にセミナーをお願いしまし
た。

内容は激しい気象擾乱であるにもかかわらず、スケールが小さくて突然
発生・発達ため予報が非常に難しいポーラーロウの予報についての話で
す。ノルウェー北部管区気象台は北極圏に続く広いノルウェー海上を予
報対象域としています。この海域は漁業や交通の要所でポーラーロウに
よる海難がしばしば起こり予報にはたいへん苦労しているようです。ポ
ーラロウはノルウェー海上ほど頻繁ではないですが、冬季日本海上でも
しばしば出現します。現場予報官ならでの話も聞けると思いますので、
4年生も含めて多数の皆様のご来聴をお願いいたします。
